School Zones Reminder
From the Principal

As we end Week Six, we come to the realisation that we are now in the second half of Term Two.
Many of our students will be completing or preparing for assessment tasks that will be reflected on their Semester One reports. Equally, as we have crossed the halfway point of the term it is an opportune time to reflect on messaging to assist our community with understanding what has happened and what is coming up. In lieu of a reflective newsletter article this week, I have opted to update our community on different activities and events around our school.
School Satisfaction Survey
Many thanks to our school community who participated in our recent School Satisfaction Survey.
We recorded some of our highest participation rates in these surveys this year: 125 students; 73
Parents and 40 Staff. In the coming weeks, I will look to reflect on these surveys and provide
purposeful responses and action plans to address some of the recommendations.
Assessment Books
A reminder to our community that all assessment handbooks were emailed earlier this year. If you
can not recall these booklets or can no longer find this link, we have created links directly from our
school website. Please go to www.lasalleacademy.catholic.edu.au. From there you need to click on
‘Learning and Wellbeing’ and then hover over curriculum to see direct links to each year levels
assessment handbook. Within this handbook, you will find the assessment timetables and content
areas for every subject that your child is studying this year. Please note that these were correct at
the time of publishing, there may be slight dates changes through the year due to varying circumstances.
Year 10 Work Experience
Excitingly, our Year 10 cohort are preparing for their two week Work Experience block. On the back
of a wonderful Careers Fair and a visit to CSU Bathurst for their Explore Day, our students are ready
to experience various workplaces first hand. This is an opportune time for our students to affirm or
dispel their thoughts about their considered career paths. Our school community would like to
sincerely thank all the local business, companies and services who have extended these opportunities to our students.
Western Sydney Careers Expo
On Saturday 28 th June, we will be taking any interested student in Years 9 – 12 to the Western
Sydney Careers Expo in Homebush. There are over 110 exhibitors at this Careers Expo and
represents one of the largest opportunities for our students to engage with universities around the
country, other training providers and services like the ADF, Police and Border Force. We are
conscious of the timing of this event, as it is in and around our assessment periods and the Year 10
Work experience, hence the reason why we offer this escorted trip on the Saturday. It is our hope
that students will recognise the importance of this event and register when advertised early next
week.
Staff Professional Development
Our staff have been engaging is wonderful professional development since the start of the year. Our
professional development has been varied, but all focused on ensuring we can produce the best
outcomes within each of our classes and across our campus. Of particular note, is our School
Learning Support Officers who were recognised this week by the Australian Teachers Aide
Association as being one of the best schools to engage with professional learning across the country.
These are some of the areas of staff professional development so far in 2025:
Developing Quality assessment; Developing Modified and Adjusted Tasks;
Teacher Coaching, using the Teach Like a Champion Model;
ATOMI application and usage;
Data Analysis and using data to inform teaching strategies and approaches;
Child Protection, Code of Conduct and Disability Standards;
Curriculum Development and alignment with the new NSW curriculum rollout;
Internal reviews of compliance;
Resilience Project Training;
Leadership Training;
First Aid.
Our staff are to be commended for their dedication and participation in these professional learning opportunities so that we can ensure our students have every opportunity to succeed in a safe and structured school.
Retreat Week
In Week Five, we welcomed members of the Lasallian mission team to our school to work alongside
our CSYMI students, Mrs Wilsmore-Smith and our Youth ministers in delivering a retreat week.
Retreats are an integral element of our faith based ethos. It gives our students an opportunity to
step away from the day to day academic pressures and evaluate their connection with themselves,
their peers and with God. It is a day filled with reflection and fun filled activities that ensures that
we maintain our community based school environment, grounded in faith, and reflective of our
collective values. Congratulations to all involved in this retreat week.
Successful Habits Class
This year, we have introduced a new class for Year 7 – 10 students. This class is called Successful
Habits. Students attend this class once per fortnight and gives me an opportunity to engage with all
of these students. A quote that our students are reminded of at the start of each class is: ‘For
tomorrow belongs to those that prepare for it today’. I would hope that our students will be able to
explain what this quote means to them by now. This class is designed to remind and prompt our
students to engage in habits that will ensure they have the opportunity to be successful. We complete the following tasks in this class:
Reflect on sleep patterns, breakfast and water intake;
Take the time to clean bags and organise physical resources;
Check emails and digital correspondence and respond where needed;
Update diaries and enter important dates, whilst checking that everyone knows due dates;
Focused learning on ATOMI that looks at goal setting, planning habits, study habits etc.
I hope that over the Semester to date, some of your children may be considering these habits and
make positive changes that will contribute to better outcomes in school.
Senior Subject Selection Night
Our Year 10 students can look forward to Tuesday 29 th July where we will be holding our Subject
Selection evening. All families are encouraged to attend this evening to learn what is on offer for
Stage 6 at La Salle Academy. Even those families that might believe their son/daughter will leave at
the conclusion of Year 10 are encouraged to attend, as there will be information presented, that
they will need to know about the rules and regulations regarding finishing school. You will be surprised, La Salle Academy has a lot to offer our Stage 6 students, and we look forward to welcoming you on Tuesday 29th July.
Year 9 Camp – Term Three
Another exciting adventure awaits our Year 9 cohort. Save the date: Thursday 31 st July and Friday 1 st
August. Our Year 9 cohort will be engaging in a great ‘camp’ experience. Mrs Hotham will release
details over the coming days.
Year 8 & 9 Parent Teacher Interviews
Parent Teacher Interview for year 8 & 9 students will be occurring on Tuesday 5 th August. We look
forward to welcoming these parents/guardians onsite and discussing the progress of students in
these cohorts. More information to follow at the release of our Semester one reports.
Year 10 Interviews
As part of our Successful pathways planning for our Year 10 students, we will be holding individual
meetings with each family in Year 10 in Term Three. The purpose of these meetings will be to reflect
on each student’s academic journey to date, and provide advice, recommendations and support for
decisions relating to pathways available at the end of the year. These meetings have been proven to
be successful in the last two years and we very much look forward to working alongside our Year 10
families to support our Year 10’s decision making processes.
Last year, we successfully held year level meetings to talk all things related to each year level. In
most meetings, we had at least 50% of our families in attendance and we are looking to grow these
meetings in 2025. Watch this space.
God Bless
Mr Glenn Carpenter
Assistant Principal

Reports and Mid-Year Assessment Tasks
As the semester progresses, students in all years are working hard to complete assessment tasks and exams in preparation for the end of semester student reports. Year 11 will be receiving their reports in the coming days via Compass. Students are encouraged to review the advice provided by their teachers and make any adjustments required to ensure that they are meeting their current learning goals.
Assessment tasks are meant to challenge us, and preparation and planning is the key to success. If you don’t understand what is required or you are having difficulties meeting task due dates, it is important that you communicate this to your teachers as soon as you can so that questions can be answered and amendments, where appropriate, can be made to ensure
that everyone can reach their full potential.
Mobile Phone Use
Students are reminded that phones are not to be used at school after the first bell of the day until the end of the day. This is to ensure that students’ concentration and focus is on their learning in the classroom and not the distraction of social media and messaging. Recently, we have had a number of incidents where students have not been following the school's mobile phone policy and a great deal of time is then spent investigating the breach of our ICT policy. Please be aware that students should be discouraged from texting their parents to attend the school to collect them. If a student is feeling unwell, they are to present to the office and if required, parents will be contacted via the office staff. Please review our rules regarding the use of mobile phones at school to ensure that your focus is on learning in the classroom and actually talking to each other at break times.
VET Construction Work Placement
Our VET Construction students studying at HSC Preliminary level, have their first Work Placement coming up in Week 9 and 10 and I would like to acknowledge the many local employers who have volunteered to host our students. Often, our students gain work and apprenticeships post school from these work placements, and without these fantastic employers, this could not be possible.
Have a great fortnight
Mrs Holgate
Religious Education Coordinator

At the heart of all we do at La Salle Academy is the Mission of God, a mission of love, service, and compassion. Sometimes, it may not be visible or loudly celebrated, but it is present in every quiet act of kindness, every moment of reflection, and every effort to support those in need. As a school community, we are called to be instruments of God’s grace, living the Gospel not just through words, but through action. Whether seen or unseen, God’s mission is alive in our school, shaping hearts and inspiring faith in countless ways.
Catholic Schools Week (Week 3) was a beautiful example of our students living out their faith in service to others. Together, our school community generously donated over 70 cans and tins to Nanna’s Touch and lovingly prepared more than 30 meals for B.U.S.S. (Bathurst Uniting Support Services). These contributions have made a real difference to those in need within our local community and reminded us all of the power of giving.
Lasallian Retreat Week (Week 4) was an incredible success, with Years 7, 8, 9, 10 and 12 fully engaging in their retreat day, led by our inspiring Lasallian Mission Leaders. A special thank you to our Year 10 CSYMI (Catholic Schools Youth Ministry Australia) students, who played a vital role in running small group sessions throughout the week. All felt their leadership and enthusiasm, and they are a true credit to our Lasallian identity.
Looking ahead, we are preparing for our Winter Appeal Sleepout on June 20–21. This overnight event, held at school, invites students to raise awareness for the issue of homelessness. All proceeds raised will go directly to the St Vincent de Paul Society, supporting their ongoing work with those most vulnerable in our communities. Students participating will not only gain insight into the hardships faced by others but will also live out our call to serve.
Next week, we are excited to welcome Year 3 students from St Patrick’s and St Joseph’s to La Salle on Tuesday, June 11. Our Year 10 CSYMI leaders will be facilitating a special Holy Communion Retreat Day, filled with reflection, learning, and prayer. This is a wonderful opportunity to build connections between our schools and support our younger peers in their faith journey.
In Week 8, our Year 9 CSYMI students will continue the spirit of leadership and ministry by facilitating Confirmation Retreat Days for Year 6 students from our local Catholic primary schools. It is heartening to witness the growing confidence and faith of our student leaders as they take on these important roles in our community.
As we move through the term, may we continue to embrace the Lasallian spirit of “faith, service and community”, supporting one another and always seeking to be Christ’s hands and heart in the world.
Warm regards,
Mrs Wilsmore-Smith

Mission Leader

Happy Friday Everyone!
Throughout this term, our school has donated to many social justice initiatives that help those both international and within our local community. At our school, we proudly support both Dolly’s Dream and Caritas Australia’s Project Compassion. On Do It For Dolly Day, we wore blue to honour Dolly and raise awareness about the importance of kindness, empathy, and standing up against bullying. We also held a bake sale, bringing our school community together to spread positivity and support mental health. In addition, we continue to fundraise for Caritas through Project Compassion, helping vulnerable communities around the world. These initiatives remind us that through compassion and action, we can make a real difference both locally and globally.
Hope you all have a great long weekend!!
Thank you
Your Mission Captain
Amira Kathir.

Assessment
It’s hard to believe that we are already in Week 6! At this point in the term, many of our students are focused on completing assessment tasks and our Year 12 cohort are working on their last tasks before the Trial HSC Exams take place early in Term 3. It is certainly a busy time for all! As this is our second term, students should now be familiar with the assessment process and understand their responsibilities in regards to submission and what to do if they are unable to complete their task on time. It is vital that students are organised with the planning, completion and submission of their assessment tasks and ensure they communicate with their teachers early if they are finding it difficult to complete the task. We understand that life happens and that sometimes it impacts a student’s ability to complete the required tasks. Therefore, it is important to communicate this information through the completion of the Show Cause form, as there are penalties for late submission and these penalties accumulate the longer a task is overdue. All of this information can be found in the Assessment Policy handbooks and in the student diary.
Online Platforms
To assist our students in their learning, both at school and at home, La Salle Academy subscribes to a number of online learning platforms. These platforms are designed to support and enrich the learning of our students and provide them with access to a range of resources which enable them to further develop their knowledge and understanding across a range of subject areas. These platforms include:
ATOMI

The platform provides bite-sized videos, interactive lessons, and quizzes to make learning engaging and accessible. Students across all stages have access to ATOMI and can engage with the activities set by their classroom teacher as well as use it as a revision tool by exploring the many resources aimed at addressing improvement in skills and content knowledge.
Jeddle
Jeddle is an online learning platform tailored for high school students, particularly those preparing for the Higher School Certificate (HSC). Jeddle offers curriculum-specific resources across various subjects, including English, Modern History, Business Studies, Legal Studies, PDHPE, Biology, and Chemistry. Celebrating Success and Supporting Student Wellbeing
As we reflect on a productive and engaging Term 1, we are proud to celebrate the outstanding commitment of our students. Last week, we had the pleasure of presenting certificates to those who achieved 100% attendance throughout the term—a fantastic accomplishment that demonstrates dedication, resilience, and a positive attitude toward learning. Congratulations to all recipients!
I also want to congratulate our Year 11 and 12 students who attended the CSU Careers Fair last week. It was an inspiring day, with over 1,000 students in attendance from across the region. Our senior students represented the school with maturity and curiosity, taking full advantage of the opportunity to explore a wide range of career and study pathways. Well done!
Recently, a few incidents have been brought to my attention well after the day of the issue. I encourage students to speak to their teachers on the day if they are experiencing any difficulties—whether academic, social, or emotional. Addressing concerns early helps us support students more effectively and ensures small issues don’t grow into bigger ones. Our staff are here to help, and we want all students to feel confident reaching out.
We also recognise the important role parents and carers play in identifying when a young person may be struggling. If you’ve noticed any changes in your child’s behaviour, mood, or wellbeing, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me. We are committed to working in partnership with families to ensure every student feels supported, connected, and equipped to succeed.
Let’s continue working together to make Term 2 a positive and successful experience for all our students.
Warm regards,
Mrs Tahni Hotham
Wellbeing Coordinator (Years 7, 9 & 11)

Library News

Activity Hub
In the cooler weather, the library is a welcoming space to enjoy a range of fun activities. Many students have taken advantage of the opportunity to spend time with friends whilst participating in activities such as playing board games, engaging in chess tournaments, working on the jigsaw puzzle and enjoying some mindful colouring in. It is wonderful to see our students take advantage of the opportunities provided in the library.
Reluctant Teen Readers
At the recent parent-teacher conferences held at La Salle Academy, many of our school parents and caregivers raised the issue of their child/children being reluctant readers who struggle to engage with reading on a regular basis. With the competing demands technology has raised for our young people, this is a common concern. Australia Reads is a wonderful organisation whose mission is to champion the benefits of books and reading through research, advocacy and the provision of free resources. They have outlined steps that can be taken to support our reluctant teen readers and encourage them to build their reading habits.
Some of the suggested steps include:
📖Meet Teens Where They Are
Reading and screen time shouldn’t be seen in opposition to each other. Reading the book of a movie, TV Show or game they like is the third most popular way teens find books to read, with 55% of teens using this discovery strategy. The popularity of BookTok and Bookstagram also show the power of social media to support reading behaviour through aiding with book discovery and forming online communities.
📖Get Parents Reading
For parents wanting to support teen reading, reading yourself - and having books in the home - is a good place to start. Teens who see reading modelled in their home are more likely to read and report reading more regularly than teens who don’t see the adults in their lives reading.
For more great tips on encouraging reading, visit Australia Reads.
New Books
Each month we receive a delivery of new fiction titles for our collection. Some of the wonderful texts on offer this month are:
Villain by Adrian Beck
Gaming fanatic Jay receives a strange phone call on a school trip to Titanium Tower. The voice on the other end calls himself Z. He has trapped Jay's classmates in the elevator at the very top of the skyscraper. Jay finds himself with no choice but to try and solve Z's deadly riddles. Not only that, he has the worst person possible helping him: Hudson Hamm, the school's star athlete and resident tough guy. Soon Jay and Hudson are on a high-stakes scavenger hunt around the city. Can they team up to beat Z at his own game? If not, their classmates and family members will pay with their lives.
The Glittering Edge by Alyssa Villaire
An unputdownable gothic contemporary fantasy with the feuding families of Romeo and Juliet, the dark magic of Krystal Sutherland and a love triangle to rival The Inheritance Games. The locals of Idlewood whisper of a tragic love story that began a decades long blood feud. For as long as anyone can remember, the De Luca witches and the wealthy Barrion family have been sworn enemies. Ever since the curse that changed their fates forever. Now, if a Barrion falls in love with you, you'll die. But when Penny Emberly's mother becomes the curse's latest victim, she must bring together two bitter rivals, Alonso and Corey, in order to save her mum's life and stop the feud for good. Diocese Basketball
On Friday 30 May, our Senior Basketball team travelled to CSU Bathurst to play in the Diocesan Basketball Tournament. The first game was a narrow loss to a very big St Matthews Mudgee team, with Archie Morris leading the team with some strong defence and scoring inside and Mitchell Lane hitting from the outside. Zac Fitzpatrick also contributed well on defence. Game two was against Red Bend, and after a slow start our boys clicked into gear, with Ayden Bayer-Barrow and Kyan Campbell scoring inside and on the fast break, and Jai Osbourne playing excellent defence and scoring a timely basket. This win qualified Lasalle for the semi final against St Johns Dubbo.We started well in the semi final, however a poor stretch in the first half littered with turnovers allowed St Johns to build a lead. Our boys competed hard in the second half and cut the margin to single figures, however St Johns ultimately hit a few threes to seal a 17 point win and knock us out of the tournament.A big thanks to all of the boys for their efforts and the fantastic way they represented the school on the day as well as Levi Taylor, Fletcher Impey and Kooper Handley who helped out during training for the tournament.

Year 11 & 12 Students Explore the Science Behind Sport at CSU
On Wednesday of Week 6, Year 12 PDHPE and Year 11 Health and Movement Science students were immersed in a day of hands-on learning by the School of Allied Health, Exercise & Sport Sciences at Charles Sturt University (CSU) in Bathurst. Guided by esteemed academics Dr Tegan Hartmann and Dr Kerry Mann. The purpose of the excursion was to deepen students’ understanding of key concepts in exercise science and biomechanics.
During the Exercise Science Workshop, students participated in real-world testing procedures such as VO₂max, blood lactate sampling, the Wingate test, and electrocardiogram (ECG) analysis. They not only observed but also collected and interpreted data, applying theory to practice in a meaningful and engaging way.
In the Biomechanics Workshop, students explored movement analysis using cutting-edge equipment, including electronic timing gates, force plates, and infrared motion tracking systems. These practical sessions allowed them to experience how data-driven insights can enhance athletic performance and injury prevention.
The experience was designed to extend classroom learning into a university environment. Mr Makejev and Mrs Hotham were incredibly proud of how the students made the most of the opportunity to engage with the field of sports science in world-class laboratories by expanding their knowledge, asking insightful questions, and getting a taste of university-level study.
A big thank you to Dr Hartmann, Dr Mann, and the team at CSU for their warm hospitality and expert guidance.
Mr Todd Makejev
PDHPE/TAS Coordinator

All Things Attendance
It is law in NSW that all school age children must attend school every day that the school is open.
There is a direct relationship between learning success and excellent attendance
Can you believe that we are nearly at the end of Term 2, where has the year gone?
This newsletter is to remind parents and guardians of the importance of regular attendance for their child at school.
- We are now experiencing a high level of absence at school due to sickness – Cold and flu and Covid is back in the mix. We ask that if your child is displaying symptoms of cold and flu to keep them at home. If you are worried that your child is missing any lessons, please let the school know.
- Whilst at school and at home we ask that we adopt the usual practices of washing and sanitizing our hands regularly to keep the germs at bay.
- There has been an increase in children being absent during the school term for non-essential travel and we ask that this be only done when absolutely necessary. If you are planning on taking leave during the school term, even if this only for a few days, we ask that you contact the school prior to going away as some leave needs to be approved by the school Principal.
- We encourage parents and carers to make every effort to schedule appointments outside of school hours, however we realise this may not always be possible.
- Parents please also remember to update your child’s absences when they are not at school. This needs to be done within 7 days from the time of the absence. You can do this in a number of ways but we ask that you access the Compass Parent portal as the main contact.
- To enter a note on compass please follow the instructions below. Please remember to change the start and finish time to reflect a full day’s absence as shown in the second picture
- You may also send an email to the school – lasallelithgow@bth.catholic.edu.au, send in a note with the child when they return or call the front office – 6354 5100 and explain the absence. If you are having issues with Compass, please contact the front office and we will be more than happy to assist you.
- Parents if you have received any notifications in regards to your child’s attendance could you please action this or if you have any questions, please contact me or the school.
- Also if you are experiencing any difficulties with your child attending school please do not hesitate to contact their Year/Pastoral Care advisor to find ways in which we can help your son or daughter.
